The Red Box physical theatre rehearsal space at Lilyfield was purpose-built as a home and creative hub for Sydney’s physical dance theatre community. The clear and distinctive building form, on the site of the former Parachute Regiment Headquarters, is a place where artists have the resources to realise their vision in an inspiring environment and a collaborative performance culture. External super graphics tie the building into the broader urban context, reducing it to human scale and providing the clean building form with a dynamic performance quality.

The building is a simple metal clad, plywood lined and soundproofed metal framed structure, with a concrete floor. The multi-function space has an air circulation system for cooling and gas heating.

The rehearsal space features 12 metre high ceilings and is suitable for rehearsal of large scale performance productions, including circus, physical theatre, dance and theatre, as well as film shoots, safety training and corporate events.

The building is juxtaposed against historic brick buildings in a largely industrial context. The ‘Red Box’ is part of a long term redevelopment masterplan of the site for arts and community use.
