Woodhead completed the fast-tracked expansion and redevelopment of the Sydney International Airport on time for the Sydney 2000 Olympic games. Working closely with Bovis Lend Lease and Sydney Airports Corporation Limited (SACL), Woodhead created the ‘total journey experience’ and a ‘sense of place / brand’ for the SA2000 Terminal 1 redevelopment. This concept approach focused on the needs and experiences of the passenger at every stage of their travel process, from departures to arrivals.
The design centres on experiences and facilities that a passenger requires when moving through a transportation facility, including ease of use and creating a first impression of Sydney, Australia. Passenger comfort and amenity is primary.
Project works included;
- 3 additional plane positions on Pier C
- 1 additional plane position on Pier B
- 6 new plane positions, aerobridges and remote positions
- 25 new aerobridges
- maximised retail opportunities throughout of approximately 20000m2
- 62 check-in counters
- relocation of immigration
- new customs at Departures
- twin baggage reclaim installations
- extended capacity in arrival hall areas, all in readiness for the 2000 Olympic Games
A cohesive approach ensured the commitment of all stakeholders to ensure that levels of urban design, architecture, interior design, graphic design, marketing, public relations, service provision, retailing and management were embraced and met.
This airport was deemed an official Olympic site.
