State Records commissioned Woodhead to refurbish the former city warehouse originally built for the drug company A.M. Bickford and Sons and later used by antique dealers and auctioneers Megaw & Hogg, for more than 40 years.
The building retains much of the original external sandstone walling, making a significant contribution to the heritage streetscape. The conservation and adaptive re-use works removed intrusive additions from the building, revealing its heritage value.
New services are designed as contemporary insertions within the historic spaces, maintaining the industrial theme and character of the space. An open void, stairs and lift provide a visible connection between floors.
A contemporary street-level canopy and shop front is designed to attract public attention and to interpret the original shop front.
