Amidst one of the worst droughts facing the state, the Queensland Department of Infrastructure and Planning commissioned the construction the Southern Regional Water Pipeline, a 100 kilometre link to move water between the Gold Coast, Logan and Brisbane. Woodhead was commissioned to provide the architectural services for the pipeline and pump stations that link two of south-east Queensland’s primary water supplies.

The pipeline, connecting the Gold Coast and Brisbane water supplies, stretches some 150kms and requires numerous pump halls along the way to keep the water pressure constant.

Woodhead’s design team was tasked to produce a standard design that could be adapted to each individual pump station site.  To date, five pump stations have been documented, with pump stations at Swanbank, Bundamba, Chambers Flat and Coomera completed.

Each building is designed to make a statement within the landscape whilst reflecting the practical use of the facility. Large flowing swirls of aggregate, patterned onto the facades of the concrete blade walls, reflect the flow of water whilst the random placement of Alpolic cladding contained within the end walls symbolise the reflective qualities of surface water.

This project has been successful in taking the functionality of an industrial building developing an innovative and exciting designed outcome.
