Masterplanning and Airport Design
The brief for this project called for the design of a new city to support the expansion of the Qingdao Airport. Woodhead provided the winning entry in the international design competition, held to find an outstanding concept for the development. Woodhead’s commission included both the city masterplan and the staged design of 30 gate international airport. The airport is designed over two phases; 2010 and 2030 based on traffic forecasts and city’s increasing importance as a destination.
The airport and masterplan are a reflection of international standards and contemporary design trends. The masterplan establishes an economic development centre or ‘airport city’.
The masterplan for the airport and the city ensure a sense of completeness during every phase of masterplan implementation.
The airport is an emblem of Qingdao, designed to express the natural beauty and feeling of the region. The airport provides ease of use and a memorable expression of the city, as well as a focal point for economic development.
Overall, the design establishes a ‘sense of place’ focused on passenger comfort, convenience and ease of travel. The resulting facility reflects the people of Qingdao’s pride in their city.
