This hotel and serviced apartment development of 130,000sqm is located on the only beachside property along the main coastal drive in Qingdao, north-east China. The project consists of two towers with a shared podium. The west tower contains 180 luxury serviced apartments and the east tower is a 460 room Grand Hyatt resort hotel.
The architecture resolves the positioning between a high-class address and design with the relaxed feeling of a beachfront resort. Critical to the long term success of the development is the use of resilient materials and appropriate detailing to reduce maintenance in the marine environment.
Woodhead is appointed to design the hotel within a building envelope predetermined by a previous development approval. This has been achieved with a resulting contemporary hotel architecture reflecting the demands of Hyatt’s top brand hotels.
The design orientates towards the podium retail centre and flows out onto the external recreation area keeping the blend of city and resort to the advantage of all patrons. Through the use of clean lines and a subtle, nautical theme, the architecture comprehensively completes the challenge of site and program.
The new Grand Hyatt hotel in Qingdao, the sailing venue for the 2008 Olympic Games, will raise the standards of short and long stay accommodation in this growing city.
