NICTA is an independent company in the business of research, commercialisation, research training, and is the largest organisation in Australia dedicated to ICT research. Having outgrown their premises at the historic rail sheds within the Australian Technology Park precinct, NICTA committed to leasing 5,400sqm over three floors in a new building within the same precinct.
Commissioned to undertake the workplace planning and design of the new space, Woodhead’s response delivers on a design philosophy evolved from NICTA’s innovative research nature and their the need to communicate and share knowledge. Commissioned during the construction phase of the base building, Woodhead was able to recommend modifications to the existing architectural design within the NICTA tenancy.
The modifications include an interconnecting stairwell contained within a large, light-filled central atrium at the heart of the premises that serves to connect floors and maximise chance meetings, thus improving business efficiently and adding cultural value.
The large open reception area leads directly to the interconnecting stair with the continuation of a stone floor finish, glass and stainless steel emphasising the connection. Informal meeting areas surround the central stair. The strong graphics, coloured to reinforce NICTA’s corporate identity, then flow into the more discrete work areas.
The design focuses on transparency and openness, enhancing communication and knowledge sharing, whilst still delivering a functional and secure environment.
