NSW State Transit Authority’s Leichhardt Bus Depot redevelopment accommodates Australia’s largest environmentally friendly, low-emission bus fleet.
Working within the existing site parameters, Woodhead carried out extensive analysis to achieve the best possible operational efficiency and sustainability outcome for the STA. The completed depot includes a new administration building with staff amenities; bus wash facilities, bus refuelling facilities (both CNG and diesel), workshop and vehicle service bays, and car-parking for 125 cars.
The site is enclosed along the northern and eastern boundaries by a custom designed precast concrete panel wall, with striations reflecting the dynamic movement of the neighbouring roadway. The textured precast panels extend into the administration building foyer, creating a synergy with the external façade and the industrial context.
The design complements the ‘greening’ of the bus fleet with the introduction of a variety of energy saving features for both the new buildings and the re-use of existing heritage buildings. The new facility provides a safer and healthier working environment for administration and maintenance staff as well as the bus drivers.
The design considers and resolves noise and lighting issues with surrounding residential properties and applies sustainability features including passive solar design initiatives regarding building orientation and envelope.
The interior fitout features a natural materials palette alongside recycled concrete and steel for construction, rainwater harvesting, low VOC / emission plan and the use of Forest Stewardship Council Certified Timber.
The completed works included the widening of Balmain road to accommodate a 3m cycle way, and an equitable setback. The depot has remained fully functional throughout the construction period.
