Woodhead was commissioned to design a facility for the assembly of Hawk Fighter Aircraft for British Aerospace (Phase 1). Phase 2 involved conversion to a deep-level maintenance facility.

The facility comprises hangar space for 16 aircraft, workshop facilities and office/support accommodation together with stores, an apron area, a link taxiway and site infrastructure.

The building is sited within a harsh environment which has impacted the design in a number of ways. From a functional point of view it was of paramount importance to provide a facility which would withstand the climatic conditions of the exposed environment (sun, rain, wind, and dust) and also the many environmental concerns specific to an airport environment (pollution, wind driven sand noise, etc.)
