Woodhead was the only Australian company invited to take part in the global design competition for the new Kolkata (Calcutta) International Airport in India.

The design competition called for the new International Airport for Kolkata which would be a focal point for the city’s future business growth and urban development.

Woodhead’s terminal is designed with a north-south modular truss system to enable segmental expansion. The structural trusses emulate the historic Howrah Bridge which spans the Hooghly River and is a famous symbol of Kolkata and West Bengal.

Intended to follow a phased construction, it would be most economical to build the terminal up to the major vertical circulation point in the centre of the building. This would allow the terminal to function as a departures only facility whilst the existing terminal could accommodate arrivals.

The second phase of development would see the completion of the terminal and demolition of the existing facility.

The design allows for internal expansion by providing capacity for future expansion of baggage make-up carousels, the development of airside retail and the extension of departures and arrivals concourses to allow for additional gates.
