Woodhead has designed the refurbishment of key service areas of the King Edward Memorial Hospital foyer including, birthing suites, neonatal nursery, emergency department and associated offices.

The foyer required careful consideration due to heritage aspects of the building. The lift doors and wall moldings were retained as features of the original building. As this is a busy space, colours, finishes and details of the desk and carpet were selected for their durability as well as their design.

The brief for the birthing suites was to evoke an atmosphere of calm and tranquility whilst housing all the necessary equipment needed for labour and child birth.

The level of finishing and detail is of high standard with curved plasterboard ceiling and vinyl floor details reminiscent of hotel spaces than a public hospital.

The neonatal nursery provided several design challenges due to space limitations. The joinery includes state of the art mechanisms and a feature jigsaw motif was used on the floor both for decorative effect and to incorporate a different finish in wet areas.
