The Hervey Bay International Airport celebrates the sun, the breeze, and the lifestyle unique to this popular holiday destination. The facility provides a welcoming place for visitors seeking to discover the culture and natural beauty of the Fraser Coast. A five fold increase in passenger numbers is incorporated into the airport’s expansion whilst also integrating the pre-existing terminal structure and capitalising on the central location of the existing aircraft apron and landside car park.

The brand identity of the airport is a key consideration in the design and theming of the terminal to ensure passengers are greeted with a ‘sense of place’. This is achieved by creating a relaxed, open plan terminal with expansive views and use of natural light, and introducing vibrant colours internally through the selection of fabrics, fixtures and finishes.

Kinetic forms are expressed in the building’s roof line, reflecting the aerofoil of a plane’s wing or the hydrofoil of a breaking wave, strengthening the connection between the air and sea.

Woodhead’s design provides an open, flexible and expandable terminal solution, with strategically located infrastructure, such as check-in areas and baggage handling which are easily expandable in the future.

The simple but iconic building is well regarded by both locals and tourists alike.
