Woodhead’s design proposal for Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport integrates the complex functions of the airport within an organic envelope in harmony with the surrounding topography of Chengdu. It is focused on the experience of the visitor, a celebration of human scale and tactility in design, reinforcing a sensory experience derived from and unique to Chengdu.
The oval forms used to generate the architecture are derived from the organic silk-pods found in the silk industry prevalent in the region. These forms are geometrically pure and based on nature’s principles. They are interpreted in the building form in an elegant and contemporary manner. The outcome is a form which is; woven, organic and connected.
The fluid form is used to unite the various functions within the airport complex creating a legible and cohesive unity and free and legible passenger flows. The clustering of passenger activities encourages social communication and dwell spaces.
The building skin works to provide thermal and visual comfort, and achieve a high level of natural day light through a transparent envelope, with integrated sun and heat protection.
The scheme optimises the use of the existing site. Woodhead’s design resolves the demand requirements, integrates the new and existing terminal, has a logical staging arrangement, maintains a balance in capacity, is convenient, flexible and economic to operate.
