Centro Bankstown (formerly Bankstown Square) is a culturally diverse and prominently located shopping centre in one of Australia’s most densely populated trade areas. Woodhead has designed a retail centre which better caters for the more diverse needs of the local community and today’s customers.
The design philosophy is contemporary, encompassing clean crisp lines with references to a distinctive modern Australian ambience. An ‘icon’ gateway building on Bankstown’s main arterial road provides a new ‘first impression’ identity for both the shopping centre and the entire Bankstown town centre.
Stage one of the redevelopment comprises a new Woolworths supermarket, Big W discount store and Fresh Life Precinct with an additional 30 speciality shops.
Stage 2 consists of 15 new specialist shops in a new mall with travelators connecting two retail floors and three car parking decks within the 40-year old structure. A complete BCA Fire Engineered upgrade has also been completed.
Stage 3 included the development of a new two level Myer department store anchor, a new two level mall extension with 30 new shops and a three level parking deck extension.
The stage development has enabled the centre to remain functional throughout the entire redevelopment process.
Future proposed works also include a new open-air precinct, a landscaped semi-circular courtyard comprising a variety of alfresco dining experiences and lifestyle retail outlets. This forms part of the town centre entertainment precinct and will provide an eclectic mix reminiscent of the best of ‘high street’ retail.
