Located in Suqian, just outside of Shanghai, this design and masterplan proposal for a new nursing school and facilities for 6000 students aims to bring a world-class learning environment for prospective students from the area.

A brief was constructed that included teaching rooms, laboratories, student and staff facilities, library, central hall, administration, dormitories and sport and recreation complex with a small supermarket and public bathing facilities attached.

The design was based on creating a communal style campus with strong planning principles and functional arrangements. These were then given shape with references to lifestyle and medicinal heritage, relevant to the ideals of good health the school would strive to promote.

A base template for building location and shape was derived from an abstracted map of the nearby farmlands - the idea that a healthy body is maintained on a foundation of well balanced diet.

These components were then further abstracted and fused with pedestrian and landscaped patterns following the flow of 'chi' through a map of a body superimposed on the site. Locations of major acupuncture points became references for medicinal trees / gardens or stations that could be used as external gathering and tutoring points.

This process created a design that is a unique, efficient and relevant example of a modern college campus.
