Westmead Hospital, Stage 1 Redevelopment

Westmead, New South Wales

As part of the Western Integrated Network Strategy, this first stage of the redevelopment of the major teaching hospital at Westmead near Parramatta, NSW, required a $100 million addition and alteration program to be completed by 2007. The original hospital was opened in the late 1970's and has continued to serve as the major referral hospital for the west of Sydney where the bulk of the population lives.

Woodhead as part of the WIN Partner Team, working with the construction company Thiess Pty Ltd, have been developing a new 3 storey addition across the south-western end of the complex for a new ICU, allied health and ambulatory care departments. The addition of a floor and major redevelopment providing for the comprehensive womens health services at the north-western end of the complex is another milestone of the redevelopment. The overall upgrade includes extended Cancer Services, new PET (Positron Emission Tomography) suite and additional CAT (Computer Axial Tomography) scanner as well as the new renal inpatient unit.

Careful consideration was given to the need for maintaining a working hospital that undertakes complex service delivery 24 hours a day. This has driven the staging and timing of the redevelopment. The replacement of the ageing engineering infrastructure required careful structured coordination of new services without disrupting service supplies in many highly serviced areas of the hospital.

Woodheads health design team have provided for the most comprehensive and sophisticated medical technology as well as creating patient-centred places within the hospital. This project reflects new directions for health facilities design into the 21st century.
