Westmead Campus Helicopter Flight Deck
Westmead, New South Wales
The NSW newborn and paediatric emergency transport service (NETS) is a statewide clinical service for medical retrieval of critically ill newborns, infants and children in NSW.
Woodhead was engaged to provide the architectural and interior architecture services for the new NETS / Child Flight Base facility at Westmead Hospital.
The NETS building has been designed over four levels within very tight site constraints. The building accommodates ambulance parking on level 1 (ground) and a hangar and helicopter flight deck on level 4. Offices, staff and crew accommodation, associated equipment and training facilities are spread over the two middle levels.
The helicopter landing deck is constructed over the existing carpark. The deck has the capacity to accommodate landing on the FATO, parking for one helicopter, with provision for another helicopter to pass to or from the adjacent hangar. The hangar has been designed to accommodate two Child Flight Eurocopter Dauphin helicopters.
The building also connects to the existing elevated linkway which joins Westmead Hospital to the Childrens Hospital. The new NETS base facility provides an integrated helicopter, ambulance, administration and operations facility to assist with efficient and effective patient retrieval.
