Castlemaine Perkins

Brisbane, Queensland

Queensland brewer Castlemaine Perkins enlisted Woodhead to convert a disused bottling building into the company's national headquarters. The brief was to capture the company's rich heritage with reference to their modern approach to business.

Features include a high-tech boardroom, tap room for entertaining, beer systems room, meeting rooms and open-plan work stations. The redevelopment included a 'memorabilia wall' of red gum timber display cabinets housing some of the brewing industry memorabilia from its 120 years of production.

The design intent was to preserve awareness of the building's former function alongside its new one, in an essentially industrial-modern language. The design retained a lot of the original features of the building including brickwork, skylights and exposed timber trusses.

There is a streetscape approach to the central spine, which separates the heritage-rich public areas from the working heart of the administration and clerical sector. The ancillary functions are approached in the manner of a village under the umbrella of the original skylight roof structures.

The layout comprises a ground-floor reception - complete with an original XXXX delivery truck - first floor workshop and administration offices on the top level. All finishes were of an extremely high quality in keeping with this major corporation's image and the project was completed on time and under the original budget.
