Westralia Airports Corporation (WAC)

Perth WA

Designed by Woodhead, this three-level 9,200sqm building is first in the new Perth Airport office park development, hkew to be known as Alpha.
hkew Alpha is an innovative office building designed with the central core accommodating all services, entry lobby, meeting rooms and cafe and connected to two large floorplates which are completely open for maximum flexibility. The design process gave consideration to the structural grid and creating a clean internal perimeter.
Both floorplates are oriented to face 10 degrees to north and south to give the building good passive solar performance which is enhanced by sunshading on the north facade. East and west facing facades have reduced fenestration protected by a dramatic perforated metal sunscreen. The cafe and meeting rooms open to a central landscaped courtyard which is enhanced by a water feature and artworks.
Perth Airport occupies the top floor of the first stage of hkew Alpha, which is 1,330sqm. The key focus from the onset of this project has been maximum efficiency of space, with the client investigating many possibilities of open plan design, having come from a predominantly cellular environment.
The final design outcome is to increase the communication and interaction in the 100% open plan office space, to ensure ultimate flexibility in the future.
The conceptual design was established around colours associated with the blue of the sky, the yellow of the sun and the grey of the tarmac. This colour palette is reflected in the refined materials and finishes of the public areas, and the more playful use of bolder colours in the staff break-out areas.
The client exhausted many workstation configurations and arrived at a 120 degree module in clusters of 3 and 6. The workstations are of generous proportions and careful consideration has been made with regards to sustainability. Where possible, materials have been selected to reflect this approach.
