Rural Fire Service Headquarters

Homebush, New South Wales

NSW Rural Fire Services new headquarters was officially opened in November 2004. The new facility integrates all RFS departments, offering a pleasant workplace environment with an abundance of natural light. A wide range of economically viable sustainable design principles were included, such as energy efficiency, greenhouse emission reduction and indoor air quality.

The main atrium houses the State Operations Centre, which is the control and communications centre for the NSW Rural Fire Service. The media are able to view this operational heart from observation areas provided in the building. This area also benefits from underfloor air delivery, providing clean air efficiently to users.

The second atrium comprises a library of resource material for public education on key issues, ranging from hazard reduction through to the history of the service. The new headquarters also houses a media centre with full media conferencing facilities and a wide range of training facilities.

Internally, the three storey building is designed around two atriums to maximise natural light to interior spaces. The transparent and open work environment reflects the buildings role as the central source of communication between the organisation and the community. The impressive entry foyer is three storeys high and features plasma screens that display RFS services and general educational information.

This is the first time that all departments have been located in a single building, creating a unique opportunity for maximising interaction between the operations and administrative areas, promoting a more united work culture. The NSW Rural Fire Service is the worlds largest fire service, with approximately 69,000 volunteer fire fighter members, providing emergency services to over 90% of NSW.
