Centro Bankstown

Bankstown, New South Wales

Centro Bankstown (formerly Bankstown Square) has served the local community for many years but now requires expansion and redevelopment to cater for the more diverse needs of today's customers. The existing 67,500sqm retail centre is being expanded by 28,500sqm, with an additional 1,000 parking spaces.

A focal point of the redevelopment is a new open-air precinct, a landscaped semi-circular courtyard comprising a variety of alfresco dining experiences and lifestyle retail outlets. This area forms part of the town centre entertainment precinct and will provide an eclectic mix reminiscent of the best of 'high street' retail.

The architectural design philosophy for the redevelopment is contemporary, encompassing clean crisp lines with references to a distinctive modern Australian ambience. This is manifested in the emphasis upon light and shade, with an extensive use of glass and wide angular roof overhangs.

As the existing complex is predominantly inward facing, in separate disparate styles constructed over three decades, a 'kit of parts' approach has been adopted. Identifying elements, such as a family of entry statements, roof top skylights and facade banner treatments, have been created to bring the complex together in a unifying harmony.

A vibrant active frontage of individual freestanding buildings, surrounded by landscaping, is designed to provide a positive introduction. An 'icon' gateway building on Bankstown's main arterial road provides a new 'first impression' identity for both the shopping centre and the entire Bankstown town centre.
