Woodhead was commissioned to undertake a major refurbishment program for Smithfield Shopping Centre. The $20 million project involves a comprehensive redesign of the existing 1980s built shopping centre.

The concept behind the upgrade was to create a contemporary lifestyle shopping experience that reflects the tropical location and the local community. The vision was for Smithfield to come alive, as a vibrant and dynamic retail environment doubling as a meeting point for the local community. From a design perspective, this includes both revitalising the centres image as well as enhancing the current retail offer.

The Fresh Food precinct features high outwardly pitching roof planes, promoting a modern, spacious, light and airy environment. Sealed concrete floor finishes in the public areas combine with timber panelled roof planes and large expanses of natural light to create a feel of organic freshness.

Design enhances the overall ambience of the complex with the creation of outdoor eating and relaxing areas, increased natural light and lush tropical plantings.

The Village Green with its combination of tree canopies, shaded awnings and tropical breezes presents shoppers with a soothing haven to meet and relax. Muted earthy colours and materials encapsulate the spirit and style of the northern beaches.
