Garden of Eden
Beijing, PR China
Garden of Eden is located in the northwest part of central Beijing, in the centre of a colourful, busy area with subway interchange station, a long-distance bus station and one of Beijing's railway stations. The surrounding area carries a real 'China' feel with small shops and markets, farmers commuting to the city to sell their goods, migrant workers and all sorts of travellers.
This project presents a striking contrast to its surrounds, utilising natural hot springs within the complex as its central theme. Centred upon the concept of water, the Garden of Eden expresses this idea through the themes of nature, man and purity.
Pure white walls provide a welcome contrast to the overcast Beijing sky, drawing attention to the charming and unique skyline. Subtle and colourful ornaments are reminiscent of rainbows while softly curving lines and arches are suggestive of a living and ever-growing organism.
The strategic but naturalistic arrangement of the buildings, together with the simple light design, is a refreshing contrast to the gloomy oppression of the surrounding buildings.
The fresh new look of the Garden of Eden gives a creative twist to modern architecture, providing the old capital with a unique new development that offers an elegant, tranquil atmosphere. The perfect balance of glistening white walls and fine ornaments, coupled with the water theme, provides residents with a pleasant and serene living environment.
