Sunville House
Shanghai, PR China
With its lush green landscaping, curving waterways, mountain views and crisp white buildings, Sunville House is an innovative addition to the Chinese architectural scene.
The villa was awarded first place in the Top Ten Featured Villas of Shanghai in 2002 and is the most valuable house on the Chinese market to date, estimated at RMB 130 million (USD 15.6 million).
Nestled between two hills in western Shanghai, the villa is made up of two main buildings screened behind an S-shaped harbour. The building plans are inspired by floral motifs with elements like white fabric-covered metal petals accentuating the roofs.
An extensive leisure area is located between the two buildings, featuring barbecue and swimming facilities.
The masterplan of the villa is an exercise in balancing the social and private aspects of living, represented by the sun and the crescent moon. The spaces flow together with the 'sun' grounds associated with social components of the villa and the 'crescent moon' grounds gently giving way to the more intimate, residential section of the complex.
