Wanneroo Administration Centre & Council Chamber
Western Australia
Developing any town centre requires research. To formulate a design which caters for the multiple functions of the local council, facilitates a social space and yet resonates meaning for the local community presents a challenge in anyone's book.
The recently re-drawn Wanneroo City in Western Australia was seeking a focal point. With close attention paid to detail, Woodhead International have responded to the challenge, and answered with vigour. The result is an emphatically historical depiction of Wanneroo with an artistic edge that oozes modernity.
Soliciting public expression, the foyer prizes a number of display cabinets installed for the display of various gifts and artwork. The Foyer is the fulcrum from which access is centrally directed towards the entry forecourt and Town Square, customer service counter, public galleries, multi purpose meeting areas, administration and parking facilities.
The Council Chamber is iconic. It presides above the entrance, symbolically overlooking the square, and is framed by the Civic and Administrative wings of the development. The Administration Wing is dictated by large open plan workstations. A central void allows natural light, view to landscaping and ventilation to the basement carpark.
Layering the Administration Wings over two consecutive levels allows for excellent access and intra floor communication. The complex embodies the principle of open and interactive government, provides community use facilities and gives appropriate civic expression. It is aesthetic, accessible and economic.
