Winning international design competition proposal for staged design of 30 gate international airport. The brief called for a design over two phases; 2010 and 2030 based on traffic forecasts and Qingdao's increasing importance as a tourist destination.

The airport will be an emblem of Qingdao, designed to express the natural beauty and feeling of the region. It will be easy to use and a memorable expression of Qingdao. The new airport will be a source of pride for the city of Qingdao and a focus for economic development.

The airport will have a sense of completeness during every phase of the masterplan implementation.

The airport and its masterplan are a reflection of international standards, worlds best practice, and contemporary design trends. The airport masterplan will establish an economic development centre or 'airport city'.

The intention of this airport is to create a 'sense of place' that is focussed on the passengers' comfort, convenience and ease of travel.
