Karl has a passion for creating sustainable, commercial and cultural places using rigorous and collaborative design processes. His experience over the past fifteen years has equipped him with the skills for articulating clear visions for large complex projects and in developing and motivating talented, efficient and focused design professionals and delivery teams in a wide range of project types.
Karl has a demonstrated capability in concept, schematic and detailed design, working on urban visioning and master planning, mixed-use developments and civic projects, hospitality and tourism, commercial, retail, business park, interpretive, education and transport architecture. He takes a disciplined approached to his role as Woodhead’s Residential and Urban Design portfolio leader and coordinator of the firm’s Thought Leadership program. He also has detailed knowledge of energy efficient design principles, devices and techniques with project exploration into the extent to which these influence design outcomes.
Karl worked for over four years as Design Director and Studio Manager of Woodhead’s Shanghai office before returning to Adelaide in 2009. Karl’s work in the creation of culturally and environmentally sensitive urban visions for a number of cities in China and Vietnam has refined the urban design approach that underpins his design work as an Architect. In October 2009 Karl conducted an urban design study tour of sites across13 cities, in five countries where he researched some of the world’s best examples of place-making and expressions of cultural identity in new transit oriented developments. His city-wide view has led him to consider how our profession can reclaim ground for architects in planning, sustainability, project management and strategic advice to government and private developers.
Karl has a keen interest in the promotion of the architectural profession and its role in the cultural life of our cities and in the further development of the political presence and profile for architects in Australia and Asia.
