Floreat Forum

Western Australia

Woodhead was briefed to provide architectural design plans for extensions to the Floreat Forum, a Food and Convenience shopping centre in a suburb of Perth. The centre comprises two supermarkets and sixty specialty stores.

Floreat Forum will be Australia's first naturally air conditioned retail environment, with all public spaces being passively ventilated, heated and cooled throughout the year. This solution is a logical response to regional conditions, taking advantage of Perth's Mediterranean climate.

A central atrium acts as a heat stack, creating a hot spot at roof level, which expels heated air through roof vents. This process draws in cool air from within the retail space to fill the void, creating natural air flow. The cool air is provided by the 'shower towers' - very simple and efficient passive evaporative coolers.

The shower towers contain a shower of water, which cools the air within the shaft, sending cool air into the retail space and drawing more air in at the top for the same treatment. The cool air then travels through the internal space towards the atrium, providing passive cooling and airflow.

The innovative redevelopment also includes a town square as a focal point, incorporating tavern and cafe precinct with a new council library. Other works include a new 3,600sqm gymnasium, 23 additional specialty shops and new parking for over 900 cars.
