Hervey Bay Airport, Fraser Coast
Hervey Bay, Queensland
Woodhead was engaged by Hervey Bay City Council to design and document the expansion of their current passenger terminal, which catered to a 35 seat regional air services, expanding it to enable the receipt of A320s and 737s.
This expansion accounted for a 5 fold increase in passenger numbers, a major increase to security requirement, the inclusion of sterile areas, the introduction of mechanical baggage handling systems, an increase to retail area and introduction of a cafe/bar.
The brand identity of the airport is a key consideration in the design and themeing of the terminal, providing passengers with a sense of place that is expressive of its Hervey Bay location and its proximity to Fraser Island.
Along the terminals land side facade the external wall open via 3 large operable walls, enabling both strong visual connections through the building, and allowing the terminals concourse area to be naturally ventilated.
The design solution provides an open, flexible and expandable terminal, and strategically located infrastructure, such as check-in areas and baggage handling which are easily expandable in the future.
Virgin Blue and Jetstar commence regular services from Sydney on the 29th July 2005.
