South Australian Museum

Adelaide, South Australia

The east wing of the heritage listed museum building was completely renovated to create extra gallery space for the Aboriginal Cultures exhibition. The building work included new lifts, building services, and the addition of an earthquake resisting structure.

The works required a high level of technical resolution to meet Building Code of Australia, Disability Discrimination Access requirements and services needs.

A new glazed entrance structure was designed to house the museum shop, cafe and orientation centre, whilst maintaining views of the heritage facades. This contemporary design form is sympathetic and appropriate to its heritage context.

Extensive consultations were undertaken with Heritage Authorities to arrive at a design solution for the Aboriginal Cultures Gallery.

Careful detailing and use of materials has created a vibrant and luminous public space within a restricted site. Murray Bridge sandstone blocks matching the east wing were salvaged from a 1960's addition for reuse in the new entrance structure walls. The floor is paved with Mintaro slate.
