The inaugural One to One design Day took place on Friday 7th October 2011. One to One is a collaboration between New South Wales Universities and several professional design firms, and endeavours to provide young architects and designers with a creative and collaborative platform to challenge their design skills.
The 2011 One to One challenge required different design teams to create a temporary bar from recycled materials and found objects sourced from Reverse Garbage.
Woodhead representatives, Bella Pescia, Carmen Masry and Lucy King, participated in three different design teams on the day. Collaborating with other architects, designers and university students, each team was given the task of designing a component of the temporary ‘bar’. The teams were assigned a variety of different recycled materials and found objects, ranging from bicycle wheels and wire, plastic polypipes and plastic tubs to books, vinyl records and carpet, with which to create their masterpieces.
The result was an amazing dynamic landscape of wire chandeliers, unique spatial enclosures, and quirky carpet cocktail tables.
Following the one-night-only bar experience, the entire installation was dismantled, and trucked backed to Reverse Garbage. Amazingly they could take 95% of the materials back to be used again for something else.
Tim Hastwell, Design Specialist at JDH Architects, congratulated the teams on their extraordinary achievement. “…It came off better than I had ever thought it could have and I really want to credit this to you guys. All the teams worked really well together, produced excellent results and had a lot of fun together along the way.”
Woodhead look forward to being involved again next year.
